Tarn HM48
Hitch Mylius / 2022
Tarn began with a solid timber base and the project developed from draping and sculpting elegant upholstery over a simple, chunky timber base. Tarn is a sofa range of contrasts; a grounded, brutalist base with a light, elegant upholstery. A traditional method of upholstery with a contemporary visual language.
HitchMylius are based in North London where all their pieces are upholstered on site by a highly skilled team and they work with local metal and wood workers.
We worked closely with with the experts at HitchMylius to develop the upholstery design. Our vision was to create a soft, inviting curve at the front of the arms, but to keep them clean and minimise seams. After iteration and testing, this vision was achieved by introducing minimal pleats and a chamfered seam at the base, which is also reflected in the seat cushions.
In a contract market, often a sofa base is secondary to the upholstery and fabric. By bringing the base up into the arms the material and colour becomes a detail, calling attention to the beauty of the timber or finish of the metalwork. Some great colour combinations can be achieved between the fabric and metalwork. Tarn is a response to the blurring of contract and domestic; a soft, light, inviting sofa collection.
